Want to know the easiest thing to do on the “What to do to optimize your landing pages to increase conversions?” list?
LOSE THE TOP NAVIGATION
The more distractions you have on your landing page the less focus the user has on your call to action – sounds obvious right? If you are a follower/reader of this blog – then it likely is already taken care of on your landing pages – but SO many sites want to be sure to give each and every customer all the links to all the areas and all the information on their landing page that they do on all other areas of their site., that the visitor has TOO MANY link sand choices This can be and often IS horrible.
The case study below from a great site called whichtestwon.com shows how a site DOUBLED CONVERSIONS just be implementing this tactic.
Can you guess which landing page version increased wedding registry sign-ups from 3% to 6%?
Version A |
Version B |
If you guessed Version B – Nice job – you are correct…if you chose Version A…then you likely didn’t read anything up to this point – LOL. Version A without top navigation netted 100% more conversions – visitors who signed up for a free wedding registry account – that the version with the navigation bar.
Your Landing pages, can EASILY have all the information you want them to have with the use of JQuery tabs, overlays, and other optimization tactics I cover on this blog, and you can even have all of this information above the fold – BUT assuming that having all the navigation accessible on every page is correct is where it falls apart.
Here is an example of how to use tabs to get more information on the page using tabs and NOT requiring the user to scroll down.
Tab Example
Children of the sun, see your time has just begun, searching for your ways, through adventures every day. Every day and night, with the condor in flight, with all your friends in tow, you search for the Cities of Gold. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah… wishing for The Cities of Gold. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah… some day we will find The Cities of Gold. Do-do-do-do ah-ah-ah, do-do-do-do, Cities of Gold. Do-do-do-do, Cities of Gold. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah… some day we will find The Cities of Gold.

Even though your site info is important – all of it in it’s own place – in the scope of optimized landing pages, it is sadly a “distraction” when it comes to getting the user to complete the call to action and see specifically what you want them to see and do what you want them to do.
Takeaways
- Remove the top or Primary navigation from your lading pages
- An even better practice to validate this is a good tactics for your site is to A/B test this tactic so that 50% of your visitors see the page WITH the Navigation and 50% of your visitors will see the version WITHOUT the top navigation and then watch conversion for however long it takes to get 100-200 conversion and let your data tell you what to do
- Still aren’t A/B Testing? Or Don’t know wher to start with A/B Testing – simply go to Google and see their Website Optimizer – or just click here.
